影視行業男女比例不平均，許多大規模的電影也經常由男性做主導，然而女性說故事的技巧相比下會更細膩動人，也有種讓人想再三回味的魔力。不論過去，還是現在，於影視圈裡有許多女性的工作者都值得大家關注，為了宣揚女權平等的訊息，BBC這次就邀請了來自 84 個不同國家，一共有 368 位專家（185 位女性、181 位男性），共同票選出 761 部電影，並從中給予評分，排列出「最佳百大電影」。
這次的名單裡，有不少大家都熟悉的名字，包括《Lost in Translation》的導演 Sofia Coppola、《Lady Bird》的導演 Greta Gerwig、首位女性奧斯卡最佳導演得主 Kathryn Bigelow，還有跨性別女性導演組合 Lana and Lilly Wachowski 執導的《The Matrix》。第一位 1993 年的《The Piano》，由 Jane Campion 執導。名單裡也有不少經典愛情電影值得一看。
